Our Story
From beauty to biology — a deeper commitment to you
Science. Beauty. Innovation.
Beauty has always been more than appearance. It is confidence, identity, and self-expression.
At Wai Tu Kai, our foundation was built on enhancing your natural beauty. But for our founder, Sherma Alfred, a deeper calling emerged. While mastering the art of hair, she watched client after client struggle with something no styling appointment could fix: hair loss. Standard beauty treatments could not reach the root cause.
Driven by a need to give women real answers, Sherma trained as a Certified Trichologist — pairing an artist's eye with clinical understanding of the hair and scalp, and adding a new dimension to the studio.
Today we offer more than beauty services. Alongside our full suite of hair, makeup, and skincare work, we provide expert trichology consultations. We believe real beauty is rooted in health and confidence.
If you are experiencing thinning or loss, you have found a space where you will be listened to, properly assessed, and given a personalised path to restoration.
Your journey to healthier hair and renewed confidence begins with a conversation.
Meet the Founder
Sherma Alfred — Cosmetologist, Certified Trichologist, Medical Student
For more than twenty years, Sherma has built her career around helping women look and feel their best. As a Licensed Cosmetologist she has worked with thousands of clients, developing deep expertise in healthy hair, corrective hair care, luxury extensions, and scalp health.
That work at the front line of the beauty industry pushed her toward the science behind it. She went on to become Dominica's only Certified Trichologist, combining advanced knowledge of hair and scalp disorders with years of hands-on experience to treat women living with hair loss.
Her commitment to learning led her into medicine. She is currently completing her medical training (MD) while pursuing a career in dermatology, with a particular interest in hair restoration, regenerative medicine, skin-of-colour dermatology, and medical aesthetics.
She is also active in hair restoration research, focused on the conditions that disproportionately affect Afro-Caribbean women — traction alopecia, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA), lichen planopilaris (LPP), and other inflammatory hair disorders. Her aim is research that improves diagnosis, treatment, and long-term outcomes for textured hair.
As founder of Wai Tu Kai, Caribbean Beauty Salon, and Trinovera Medical & Aesthetic Clinic, she is bringing luxury client experience and medical science together — and working to make advanced hair restoration and physician-guided wellness available here in the region.
Where Her Work Sits
Four areas of practice, one standard of care.
Trichology & hair loss
Clinical assessment of thinning, shedding, breakage, and scalp disorders — then a treatment plan built for your specific diagnosis.
Healthy & corrective hair care
Rebuilding hair compromised by heat, chemicals, or tension, with the structural knowledge to know what will hold and what will not.
Luxury extensions
Custom installs designed around your hairline and density, so the finish protects the hair underneath rather than straining it.
Research & innovation
Ongoing hair restoration research into the inflammatory and scarring alopecias most common in textured hair populations.
Beauty is not simply about appearance. It is about restoring confidence through science, innovation, and compassionate care.

The Vision
Sherma's ambition reaches past the treatment room. She is working to position Dominica as a destination for advanced aesthetic medicine and hair restoration — introducing new technologies, widening access to specialist care, creating jobs, and contributing to medical tourism across the Caribbean.
Her long-term mission is to lead in regenerative dermatology, skin-of-colour medicine, and hair restoration, with a focus on the needs of Afro-Caribbean women. Through research, education, and compassionate care, she wants specialist treatment to be something women here can actually reach.
